Throughout the summer there is a constant round of fairs and festivals, from the Melon Festival in Lectoure to the World Snail Racing championship in Lagardère. Some annual local events have international standing, the largest of these are the following:
A week long celebration of everything Country and Western from the music, to line dancing, to decorated truck contests and rodeos taking place in early July in Mirande, a lively bastide town about 40 minutes south of Laouarde. Each year the festival patron is a special guest star from the United States, in 2009 it was Stephanie Powers from ‘Hart to Hart’.
Held over a long weekend in late July, Tempo Latino transforms the centre of Vic-Fezensac into one enormous cantina. Concerts featuring internationally renowned artists in the fields of Cuban, salsa and Latino music are held each evening in the arena, but there are also free musical events, a market (and lots of salsa dancing!) throughout the town centre.
One of Europe’s largest jazz festivals is held over 2 weeks in early August in Marciac, a pretty town 40 minutes south of Vic. In addition to the arena concerts starring world-famous names such as Wynton Marsalis, Herbie Hancock and Diana Krall, there are regular free concerts throughout the day near the town hall, and a range of exhibitions and stalls to browse.
